Fortum:

in harmony with nature

2023 - Wrocław

WORKPLACE

Details

Marking our second collaboration with a leading producer of CO2-free electricity, this IT hub in Wrocław represents a radical commitment to sustainable design. Moving beyond standard corporate aesthetics, the workspace prioritises the wellbeing of both people and the planet. By balancing business functionality with environmental responsibility, we created a harmonious environment that feels less like a traditional office and more like a natural ecosystem for digital innovation.

1

Warm and eclectic

To support the specific needs of the IT department, we moved away from clinical corporate aesthetics toward a "Warm Eclectic" style. The design utilises earthy colours, varied textures, and a heavy dose of greenery to create a Scandinavian atmosphere that feels more like a living room than a workplace. This "home touch" approach softens the technical nature of the work, providing a subdued, non-intrusive background that reduces cognitive load and supports focus.

Neuroinclusive foundation

The design process was grounded in our latest research on neuroscience in architecture, prioritising sensory regulation to strictly support employee wellbeing. We carefully shaped the natural lighting and selected materials with varied tactile qualities — such as cork and soft curtains — to positively impact the nervous system. Every element was engineered to support brain regeneration and ensure excellent acoustic parameters for deep work.

2

Universal and flexible design

The office is built on the principles of flexible design, ensuring it can be easily reconfigured for different scenarios. We implemented mobile walls, acoustic screens, and dry-erase boards on wheels, enabling teams to instantly reshape their immediate environment. This flexibility is supported by lightweight, mobile furniture and stackable chairs, making the space resilient to organisational changes.

Hybrid readiness

To support dynamic work styles, the space is equipped for agility. We utilised height-adjustable desks and tables throughout the office to allow for sit-stand working scenarios. Mobile phone booths and lockers provide further autonomy, allowing employees to anchor themselves wherever the task demands, rather than being pinned to a single desk.

3

The less waste philosophy

We treated the inventory as a resource rather than waste, adhering to the philosophy of "use what we already have." The fit-out strategy focused on extending product lifecycles by incorporating reused mobile furniture and actively sourcing available stock from manufacturers' warehouses. We also prioritised materials that support the circular economy loop, such as carpets without bituminous backing to facilitate recycling, and PET felt panels on walls and ceilings.

Natural and local sourcing

To further reduce environmental impact, we focused on sourcing materials from the most local providers possible to minimise transport emissions. We invested in high-quality, natural finishing materials and prioritised acoustic functionality over purely decorative elements. Even the greenery follows this ethos, utilising plants from the second circulation or propagated cuttings rather than buying entirely new stock.

The indoor jungle

The office is conceived as a "jungle" where heavy interior landscaping blends seamlessly with views of outdoor greenery. We intentionally saturated the workspace with an abundance of plant life to create a genuine connection with nature. By integrating diverse forms of greenery — from potted plants to hanging arrangements — we transformed the office into a lush, breathing environment that provides a visual break from digital screens, reinforcing the client's ecological identity.

4

Human Centered

Recognising that physical well-being drives mental performance, we integrated movement directly into the workspace architecture. The design includes sports elements such as wall bars (ladders) for stretching and exercise, encouraging staff to take active breaks. Relaxation zones and "soft" meeting rooms provide alternative spaces for decompression, ensuring that the office supports both high performance and rest.

Light and harmony

We strategically introduced additional glazing to allow natural light to penetrate deep into the core of the office. The layout prioritises daylight access for workstations, ensuring that no employees are relegated to windowless zones. This focus on natural illumination, paired with a carefully calibrated colour palette, creates a harmonious environment that staff have described as the "nicest office they have ever seen."
