2023 - Warsaw

WORKPLACE

Details

How do you design an expansive office so that it feels less like a corporate grid and more like a living ecosystem? For our third collaboration with Ørsted in Warsaw’s Varso II building, we envisioned the IT department's new space as a great ship navigating the daily rhythms of work. Co-created alongside Ørsted’s global "Love Your Workplace" guidelines, this environment completely abandons traditional layouts. Instead, through the lens of neuroscience, circular design, and omnipresent biophilia, it invites employees to embark on a daily voyage — flowing naturally from high-energy brainstorming at the "bow" to the soothing, acoustic embrace of private focus cabins.

This vast 2,400 sqm office, located in the core of the Varso II building, is deeply rooted in the "Love Your Workplace" global brandbook. This is a comprehensive set of workplace guidelines that we had the distinct opportunity to co-create with Ørsted a few years ago. Driven by years of deepened knowledge in neuroscience, well-being, and work efficiency, this playbook ensures that every Ørsted office puts people first through three main zones: collaboration, connection, and concentration.

Because this project is so heavily focused on the human experience, we decided to present this case study differently. Rather than a standard architectural overview, this is a story. We invite you to step into the shoes of a typical Ørsted IT employee. Let us guide you through a full workday, experiencing firsthand how the aesthetics, acoustics, and layout of this maritime labyrinth actively engage and soothe the senses.

1

Welcome aboard

It's Thursday. You enter the vast space and are immediately greeted by an informal check-in area. A round table sits beneath a striking acoustic light fixture. You approach, greet your colleagues, and stow your items in the nearby transparent wardrobe. You take a moment to check on the abundant plant life; greenery hangs freely from plywood shelves, stands rigidly on a green wall, and proudly displays its leaves in freestanding pots.

While waiting for the coffee machine to warm up, you catch your reflection in a decorative silver ball. The image wavers slightly, reminiscent of looking into the sea — in the reflection of waves, you are never quite the same. Coffee in hand. Power on. Welcome to Ørsted.

2

Setting the day's rhythm

You step into the Connection Zone. Here, you have choices: you can settle into a quiet niche, sit at a large communal table, or choose a smaller, more intimate setup. The lighting is adjustable to your exact needs. What do you feel like doing? You might catch up with a colleague from another department, asking how their latest presentation went, call a constructor or simply enjoy a quiet second breakfast before the rush begins.

3

Entering the flow state

It's time to dive into your tasks. Welcome to the Work Zone. Today requires intense focus, so you book a dedicated Focus Room. Inside, the yellow light reflecting gently from the ceiling creates a pleasant, non-intrusive atmosphere. You are enveloped by thick, soft carpeting and PET felt wall cladding that entirely eliminates unnecessary external noise. You automatically adjust the desk height, tailor the soft upholstered chair to your posture, and effortlessly connect your laptop to the screens. You are ready to start.

Spontaneous sparks

Comfortable desk work sparks a few new ideas you want to share with your supervisor. It’s not an official meeting yet, so you catch him in the Collaboration Zone. Curtains provide just enough privacy and acoustic comfort as you sink into soft armchairs to quickly discuss what you can improve or change together. You will organise the full team meeting next Tuesday.

The creative build-up

Later, you escape to a nearby meeting room to prepare for a co-creation workshop. The space nearby features separated and semi-open zones divided by advanced acoustic solutions. Private spaces — like acoustic booths and focus rooms — are always within arm's reach. You prepare in silence for the co-creation workshops. Is a storm coming? Ah, that’s called a brainstorming session!

The brainstorming bow

The semi-circular space is like a banquet hall at the bow of the ship. Semi-open and semi-separated. There’s still some water to go before the end-of-project banquet, but for now, the workshops went great.

The energetic colours taken from the Ørsted brandbook allow for a sense of belonging and company identity. Diverse furniture gives the chance to work at a high table with customised connections for mobile devices. You can also invite everyone to the modular sofa with a high backrest and discuss strategy in a circle. Maybe one group will stay at the table, and another will arrange the needed space on mobile pouffes? Acoustic fittings and separating curtains will absorb noise. But the curtain is slightly transparent – other employees will see you working on something useful and may feel a wave of energy.

4

Mid-day regeneration

Minds are buzzing. It’s time for a break. You move back to the Connection Zone — a versatile area created from three distinct parts that form one long, cohesive space. It features an entertainment area, a kitchenette, and a quiet corner that can effortlessly transform into a large town hall meeting space by rearranging movable furniture. You opt for a quick game of shuffleboard to clear your head.

A tranquil harbor

Meanwhile, the rest of the team seeks more static regeneration. They peek into a "cabin" just behind a partition shelf. It is perfectly calm. The wooden floor looks like a ship's deck, but nothing creaks. Hammered metal lightly reflects light and shadow, suggesting varying weather outside, while warm light in the niches highlights soft upholstery, offering relief to tired backs. And the plants? They are everywhere, subtly prompting you to breathe deeper.

The bustling deck

After the break, you head to the copy point — a setup resembling a transparent library where bookshelf storage greatly supports acoustic comfort. You enjoy a moment of hiding while still participating in the office energy (we all know FOMO). Nearby, the planning department is developing a marketing concept under a rhythm of colourful, undulating felt clouds and acoustic fittings. The sky at this time of year reflects differently from the waves.

Navigating the final tasks

You move away. Too much is happening here for you. Needing to finish a demanding task, you jump into a glass-walled room with rounded corners that beautifully break the reflections of neighbouring structures. Well-lit and comfortable, featuring a tabletop made of recycled plastic, it is the perfect place for your final call. The room feels like dawn on the ocean: first dark, calm, and serious, offering silence and peace thanks to acoustic wall panels and a natural mix of linen, hemp, wood, and greenery. The adjustable light intensity and chairs perfectly soothe the senses.

5

Power Off

Congratulations. You have completed your tasks. It wasn’t an easy day, but it’s good to come to an office that actively takes care of you. Many of these solutions — from the rigorously verified low-carbon recycled materials to the neuroscientific principles shaping the colours and acoustics — cannot be seen with the naked eye, but they are always there, ensuring you work in the best possible way. Love Your Workplace by Ørsted takes care of you.

Dropping anchor

You end the day with a little relaxation in the Connection Zone, enjoying the comfort, intimacy, and homely atmosphere. Power off. See you tomorrow, Ørsted.

6

Putting people and the environment first

Ørsted is a global leader in wind energy, currently best known for their joint venture with PGE to build a monumental wind farm in the Baltic Sea. This project marks our third successful collaboration with the company in the capital of Poland. Arranging their largest floor area in the core of Varso II meant consistently applying the global "Love Your Workplace" principles we helped co-create. Beyond the functional division into collaboration, connection, and concentration zones, we heavily prioritised Ørsted’s strategic environmental goals. A significant portion of the movable furniture was carefully refurbished or reused from previous implementations. New materials were strictly selected to align with brand guidelines — utilising recycled finishes and materials with rigorous environmental certificates, such as Cradle to Cradle. Combined with colours and shapes rooted in our continuously deepened knowledge of neuroscience and well-being, the final result is a highly efficient office that truly puts people first.
